Mass Tourism vs. Slow Tourism

we move, how we interact with destinations and what effects
our choices create.

Two approaches

Looking beyond the destination

Tourism is not only about where we travel. The way we
reach a destination, the effects connected to tourism
and the way we experience a place are all part of
the journey.

This comparison looks at Mass Tourism and Slow Tourism
from three perspectives: transport, impact and experience.
Different approaches create different relationships between
travellers, destinations and local communities.

of travelling and visiting a destination?

01 · Transport

How do we get there?

The first perspective compares the role of transport
within Mass Tourism and Slow Tourism.

Mass Tourism

Fast and efficient mobility

Mass Tourism often focuses on reaching destinations
quickly and efficiently. Large transport networks allow
many people to visit destinations within short periods
of time.

This approach can make distant destinations more
accessible, but it can also increase pressure on
transport systems and environments.

Slow Tourism

The journey as part of the experience

Slow Tourism considers the journey itself as an important
part of travelling. Alternative forms of mobility and
longer travel times can create deeper connections with
places along the way.

The focus shifts from reaching a destination as quickly
as possible towards experiencing the journey more
consciously.

02 · Impact

What impact does tourism create?

The second perspective looks at the impacts associated
with different approaches to tourism.

Mass Tourism

High concentration of visitors

Mass Tourism can create economic opportunities for
destinations through visitor numbers and tourism-related
activities.

At the same time, high visitor concentrations can create
challenges related to resources, ecosystems, infrastructure
and local communities.

Slow Tourism

Responsible relationships with places

Slow Tourism focuses on creating balanced relationships
between visitors, destinations and local communities.

The approach encourages travellers to consider
environmental, social and economic effects when making
travel decisions.

03 · Experience

How do we experience a destination?

The third perspective compares how different approaches
to tourism shape the experience of travelling.

Mass Tourism

Seeing as much as possible

Mass Tourism can encourage short stays focused on
well-known attractions and efficient sightseeing.
Destinations are often experienced through a limited
selection of highlights.

This approach can provide easy access to famous places,
but may leave less time for deeper engagement.

Slow Tourism

Experiencing places deeply

Slow Tourism encourages travellers to spend more time
in destinations and develop stronger connections with
local culture, people and environments.

The destination becomes more than a place to visit,
it becomes a place to understand and experience.
