The City
A city shaped by the sea
Kiel is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein in northern
Germany. Located directly on the Baltic Sea and the
Kiel Fjord, water is an essential part of the city’s
identity and everyday life.
Ferries, sailing, maritime research, shipbuilding and
international connections have shaped Kiel for generations.
At the same time, universities and research institutions
make the city an important place for learning and
scientific exchange.
From a Slow Tourism perspective, Kiel offers the opportunity
